How is your gas supply managed and supplied?

Since market reforms in 1996, wholesale gas has been traded like any other commodity. Suppliers buy gas from shippers - companies who contract with offshore producers to bring gas onshore - in order to meet the demands of homes and businesses.

The Gas Industry in the UK has four main elements. They are:

Producers/Importers - responsible for bringing gas onshore from the North Sea offshore gas fields, interconnector pipelines or LNG terminals - or take it from gas storage facilities.

Shippers - responsible for bringing gas onshore to the pipeline system, and trading gas and capacity with suppliers.

Xoserve Ltd- responsible for transporting gas on the high-pressure National Transmission System. Transporting gas on the Local Distribution Zones is done by National Grid and four other gas distribution companies.

Suppliers - are the companies who supply and sell gas to the consumer. The suppliers are the first point of contact when arranging a gas supply to domestic, commercial and smaller industrial premises.
